WEEK 13 NOTES, HOMEWORK AND VIDEO
NOTE 1: RIGATONI THINKS THE LONG LINE IS A TOY. WE WANT TO CHANGE THAT PERCEPTION. IN DOING THAT, WE WILL ADVANCE IMPULSE CONTROL.
NOTE 2: FOR OUTSIDE SIT STAYS & THE RECALL COMMAND, I AM NOT LETTING RIGATONI LAY DOWN, BECAUSE HE THINKS IT IS FREE TIME AND DOES NOT KNOW OR CARE THAT WE ARE WORKING.
NOTE 3: LET'S GO IS HARD WITH RIGATONI. MAKE SURE YOU INSIST UPON HIS ACKNOWLEDGING YOU AS HE COMES BACK.
NOTE 4: DON'T FORGET TO ENCOURAGE "GOOD BOY, GOOD BOY" AS RIGATONI COMES TOWARDS YOU IN THE "COME" OR "LET'S GO" COMMAND.
NOTE 5: WITH THE "LET'S GO", IT IS OKAY TO CALL RIGATONI BEFORE HE GOES TOO FAR AWAY.
NOTE 6: YOU WANT TO WORK ON NOT TIGHTENING UP ON THE LONG LINE THIS WEEK.
NOTHING BRAND NEW WAS ADDED THIS WEEK. THIS WEEK, THE FOCUS WAS ON ADVANCING THE LONG LINE WORK AS FOLLOWS:
1) COME OUTSIDE ON LONG LINE (THIS CAN BE KEPT TO LOW TO MID OUTSIDE DISTRACTIONS):
2) SIT STAY FROM A DISTANCE ON LONG LINE WITH HANDLER STANDING STILL (YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO WORK IN MORE CHALLENGING BUT NOT OVERWHELMING DISTRACTIONS):
3) LET'S GO ON LONG LINE (AROUND A DOG FAR AWAY OR OTHER MILD DISTRACTION):
UNFORTUNATELY I DID NOT GET A VIDEO OF RIGATONI, SO THIS IS A VERY OLD VIDEO WITH TUNDRA. YOU DON'T WANT TO BE THAT CLOSE TO THE DISTRACTION RIGHT NOW. THIS IS BAD VIDEO QUALITY, BUT EXACTLY THE RIGHT IDEA.
THE OLDER EXERCISES ARE STILL IN PLAY:
1. Heeling Time: 15 minutes Goal: To get three well-positioned steps in (so this may be more steps) and then 3 sets of 4 in a row auto sits. Week 12 Change: Practice Outside.
2. Transitional Leash Time: 15 minutes Goal: To get three sets of four in a row sits or downs (on his own without command) without needing to put pressure on the leash. Work in challenging but not overwhelming environments. You can still also practice inside. If you are inside, focus on increasing the stop time as a start to teach him to chill when out and about.
NOTE: YOU CAN ALTERNATE BETWEEN HEEL AND TRANSITIONAL LEASH PRACTICE ON OPPOSITE DAYS. EXAMPLE WOULD BE HEEL ON THURSDAY, TRANSITIONAL LEASH ON FRIDAY, AND SO ON.
3. Downs with handler standing and correction if needed. Time: 5 + minutes Goal: To get 3 sets of 4 in a row and start increasing the distraction to outside. You want the environment to be challenging but not overwhelming. Week 12 Change: Practice Outside.
Directions: Walk with your dog. Give them the "down" command from either straight up or where you were working before. If your dog does this, say "Good Boy" and then release them for the next set. If they do not, give the verbal correction "no", and if that does not get him do it, then be in a good position to pull tension down on the leash. Note: Rigatoni was being a bit difficult, so I started working with food to get him going.
4. Quiet Time: 5 minutes or less (at least 15 repetitions). Goal: To get 3 sets of 4 in a row with your dog either stopping their barking or not barking. Increase the distractions for him so that they are challenging but not overwhelming.
ALSO DID NOT HAVE TIME TO PRACTICE THIS, BUT PRACTICING OUTSIDE WOULD BE THE NEXT STEP FOR HIM. YOU WANT THE DISTRACTION TO BE CHALLENGING BUT NOT OVERWHELMING.
CALMING AND CHILL BEHAVIORAL EXERCISES:
1. Sit on the Dog 30+ minutes (1 to 2 times a week) Goal: Before winter hits, find a couple of times a week that you can do this in an outside, challenging but not overwhelming environment around distractions inside that challenge him. You want him to be able to settle down in less than 5 minutes.
2. Long Place (which he does well on) 5 to 30 minutes (maybe 1 or 2 times a week) Time: 30 minutes Goal: While increasing distractions and environments (using the long line outside) have him able to stay in place during those distractions for the entire time. NOTE: YOU CAN START THIS AT 5 MINUTES, SITTING NEAR HIM, AND HOLDING THE LEASH INSIDE (OUTSIDE ALWAYS).
