WEEK 12 NOTES, HOMEWORK, AND VIDEOS

NOTE 1:  CHAIN COLLAR IS ONLY FOR USE WHEN PRACTICING LONG LINE, AND LET'S GO WITH RIGATIONI OUTSIDE.  OTHERWISE, IT SHOULD BE OFF, AS IT COULD GET CAUGHT ON SOMETHING AND CHOKE A DOG.

NOTE 2:  THE LET'S GO COMMAND SHOULD BE IN MID TO MILD DISTRACTION OUTSIDE AREAS.  HE IS NOT READY TO BE AROUND OTHER DOGS (ESPECIALLY THOSE HE DOES NOT KNOW) YET.

NOTE 3:  THE COME COMMAND SHOULD STILL BE DONE INSIDE, IN NO TO MID DISTRACTIONS.

NOTE 4:  THE HEEL, LET'S GO,  AUTO SITS, SITS,  DOWNS, AND SIT STAYS SHOULD ALL START TO BE PRACTICED OUTSIDE WHENEVER WEATHER AND CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW.

LINK TO WEEK 11 NOTES, WHICH ARE THE SAME UNLESS OVERRIDDEN BY THE ABOVE.

NOTHING BRAND NEW WAS INTRODUCED THIS WEEK EXCEPT NOW WORKING OUTSIDE WITH THESE EXERCISES.

1.  Heeling  Time: 15 minutes Goal:  To get three well-positioned steps in (so this may be more steps) and then 3 sets of 4 in a row auto sits.  Week 12 Change:  Practice Outside.

2  The Recall or Come Command Time:  3 + minutes (15 repetitions)  Goal:  Just to get Rigatoni used to coming in straight towards you and an auto sit in front of you. Week 12 Change:  Now the handler is standing still after giving the "[DOG'S NAME] COME" command.

3.  Transitional Leash Time: 15 minutes  Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row sits or downs (on his own without command) without needing to put pressure on the leash.  Work in challenging but not overwhelming environments.  You can still also practice inside.  If you are inside, focus on increasing the stop time as a start to teach him to chill when out and about.

NOTE:  YOU CAN ALTERNATE BETWEEN HEEL AND TRANSITIONAL LEASH PRACTICE ON OPPOSITE DAYS.  EXAMPLE WOULD BE HEEL ON THURSDAY, TRANSITIONAL LEASH ON FRIDAY, AND SO ON.

4. Downs with handler standing and correction if needed. Time: 5 + minutes  Goal:  To get 3 sets of 4 in a row and start increasing the distraction to outside.  You want the environment to be challenging but not overwhelming.  Week 12 Change:  Practice Outside.

Directions:  Walk with your dog.  Give them the "down" command from either straight up or where you were working before.  If your dog does this, say "Good Boy" and then release them for the next set.  If they do not, give the verbal correction "no", and if that does not get him do it, then be in a good position to pull tension down on the leash. Note:  Rigatoni was being a bit difficult, so I started working with food to get him going.

3.  Sit Stays at stairs and doors Time: 10 + minutes Goal:  To either get 3 sessions of 4 in a row (sits first command, short stay) OR have him in a stay for 1 minute 4 times in a row before releasing.  NOTE: IF STAIRS AND/OR DOORS HAVE BECOME TOO EASY.  MAYBE START OUT OF SIGHT STAYS.  IN THIS, YOU ARE NOT FAR AWAY BUT OUT OF HIS EYELINE.

NOTE:  ON WEEK 12 YOU CAN START PRACTICING THESE OUTSIDE AND ON WALKS.  YOU NORMALLY HAVE TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND STAND STILL NEXT TO HIM, AND THEN STARTUILDING THIS UP TO 1 MINUTE.

THIS VIDEO IS BENNY, AS WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO PRACTICE THIS, BUT THIS WOULD BE THE NEXT STEP:

4.  Quiet Time: 5 minutes or less (at least 15 repetitions). Goal:  To get 3 sets of 4 in a row with your dog either stopping their barking or not barking.  Increase the distractions for him so that they are challenging but not overwhelming.

ALSO DID NOT HAVE TIME TO PRACTICE THIS, BUT PRACTICING OUTSIDE WOULD BE THE NEXT STEP FOR HIM.  YOU WANT THE DISTRACTION TO BE CHALLENGING BUT NOT OVERWHELMING.

CALMING AND CHILL BEHAVIORAL EXERCISES:

1.  Sit on the Dog 30+ minutes (1 to 2 times a week) Goal:  Before winter hits, find a couple of times a week that you can do this in an outside, challenging but not overwhelming environment around distractions inside that challenge him.  You want him to be able to settle down in less than 5 minutes.

2.  Long Place (which he does well on) 5 to 30 minutes (maybe 1 or 2 times a week) Time: 30 minutes  Goal:  While increasing distractions and environments (using the long line outside) have him able to stay in place during those distractions for the entire time.  NOTE:  YOU CAN START THIS AT 5 MINUTES, SITTING NEAR HIM, AND HOLDING THE LEASH INSIDE (OUTSIDE ALWAYS).
