Week 5 Notes, Homework, and Videos

NOTE 1:  WITH LOOSE LEASH WALKING INSIDE AROUND PLANTED DISTRACTIONS, HOLD THE LEASH. DO NOT HAVE THE LEASH DRAGGING.

NOTE 2: WITH LURED HEEL STEP 2 INSIDE AROUND PLANTED DISTRACTIONS DO NOT HAVE THE LEASH DRAGGING.

NOTE 3:  SINCE THERE IS AN INCREASING AMOUNT TO DO, I HAVE ADVISED ROTATING SOME EXERCISES OR PRACTICING THEM FOR LESS DAYS.

NOTE 4:  THIS IS A REALLY GOOD TIME TO FOCUS ON HIS WALKING OUTSIDE.  SO I AM PUTTING EMPHASIS ON THAT FOR THE TIME BEING.  IN OTHER WORDS, SOME OF THE EXERCISES WE HAVE BEEN DOING WILL BE DONE OUTSIDE WHILE WALKING (ASSUMING THE WEATHER COOPERATES).

Relax and Calm Exercises:

These are the same, unless you have an opportunity (better weather) to practice outside or have a good inside distraction to work with.

  1. Sit on The Dog for 30 minutes. Practice this 3 times a week when you are not practicing Long Place.

  2. Long Place for 30 minutes. Practice this 3 times a week when you are not practicing Sit on the Dog NOTE:  NOW WE ARE SITTING OR WALKING FURTHER AWAY FROM HIM WITH THE LEASH DROPPED.  JUST DON'T WALK OUT OF HIS SIGHT WHEN DOING THIS.

  3. Puppy Exam 15 minutes. Practice this about 3 times a week or every day if you are clipping nails one at a time.

Obedience Exercises Related to Walking on Leash Outside.:

  1. Relieving Leash Tension 5 minutes Goal: Three sets of 4 in a row outside, now holding leash when he makes tension in front of you or to the side of you on 6' leash.Week 5 Change: Working on this exercise outside.  You can also still practice this inside.

  2. Loose leash inside with distractions 5 minutes Goal: 3 sets of 4 in a row walking by distractions like food distractions.  You want the leash to be completely loose for each repetition before you can call it successful.  You want the leash to be fully loose (it can be shorter, but it should make a J) for each repetition before you can call it successful.

  3. Luring Step 2 5-10 minutes Goal:  3 sets of 4 strings (heel auto sit) in a row around a distraction (like food on the floor) inside on 6' leash. Week 5 Change:  Working around planted distractions like food on the ground.  You want the leash to be fully loose (it can be shorter, but it should make a J) for each repetition before you can call it successful.  Also be picky on the position being his shoulder with your leg.

  4. Leash Behind Leg 5 minutes. You may want to practice this inside, similar to 1 and 2 above.  NOTE: NEVER DO THIS ON STAIRS OR ANY TRICKY OR NOT LEVEL SURFACE.

  5. Outside Walking Using Protocols Exercises like:
  • NOTE: YOU CAN WORK ON JUST ONE AND REACH A GOAL, OR YOU CAN USE THESE WHEN IT MAKES SENSE AS YOU ARE WALKING.
  • Stand like a Tree or Relieving Leash Tension Goal:  If practicing these individually 3 sets of 4 in a row.

  • Let's Go Goal on 6' Leash:  3 sets of 4 in a row.

  • Sits first command until 3 sets of 4 in a row

  • Still Sit Stays working up to 30 seconds Goal:4 in a row at whatever time you are working on.

  • Circle Sit Stays working up to 30 seconds.

  • Attention to Name (this starts to get him dialed in to check with you). This one can be difficult outside.  So maybe practice this in the yard first and get 3 sets of 4 in a row.  NOTE: I MISSED GETTING A VIDEO OF THIS.   SO THIS IS FUDGE, AND IT IS INSIDE.

  • Practice Leash Behind The Leg, although you may want to do this when he is walking on loose leash inside, around distractions first.  You may also want to practice this inside first.  Goal:  Just to practice this until he knows not to put pressure on the leash. NOTE:  NEVER DO THIS ON ANY STAIRS OR UNEVEN SURFACES THAT IS HARD TO KEEP YOUR BALANCE.

Obedience Exercises  As Important to Walking on Leash Outside:

NOTE: FOR THE EXERCISES WE ARE STARTING OUTSIDE, STILL PRACTICE INSIDE WITH DRAGGING THE LEASH MAYBE A FEW DAYS, ESPECIALLY IF THE WEATHER IS NOT COOPERATING.
  1. Circle Sit Stay on Walks Outside with 6' Leash 5 minutes Goal:  4 in a row at whatever time you are working on outside on 6' leash. This is separated from the walking, because you are going to want to have a great sit-stay outside later.

  2. Downs (rotate downs
  3. Send to Place (rotate send to place with play, and  send to place wo play).

  4. Let's Go on Long Line 5-10 minutes I would do this separately from any 6' leash walking.

  5. Leave It with a Cloth You Do Not Like to Simulate Megan's Jacket
  6. Flirt Pole play training 3-5 minutes Working on send to place, down, and leave it.
