Week 4 Protocols for Walking Outside on Leash

Teaching your puppy to walk on a loose 6' leash is not made up of one thing.  In fact, some of the things you have been learning are used to practice with your puppy.

Training your puppy on a loose 6' leash takes time and practice.  You want to prepare your puppy now before they are a big dog.  If you wait until then, the process will be much more difficult.

There are many environments you may walk your puppy in the future.  Every one of these environments should be a training ground.  For instance, first we have been teaching the puppy inside how to do the commands we need, like sit, stay, let's go, relieve leash tension, and lured heeling.  Now we are going to train your puppy for outside environments and inside environments in your yard and away from your yard.

Stand like a tree method:

Sits every few steps to slow your puppy's roll eventually:

Sit Stay practice first with still sit stays and then with circle sit stays:

"Let's go" to move in towards you:

Leash behind the leg cheat:

Things that are not ready but will be used later:

  • Puppy learning to relieve leash tension on their own
  • Lured heeling, which will be started with Lured Heeling Step 1.
