Week 3 Luring Changes
You will want to continue the inside luring exercises that are staying the same this week.
- Leave it (Same)
- Attention to name (Same)
- Sits and Auto Sits (this can now be practiced with lured heeling)
- Let's Go (See directions on separate blog for outside practice on long line)
- Down (Changed Directions Below)
- Circle Sit Stay (Changed Directions Below)
(CHANGED) DOWN WITH HANDLER STANDING:
Main Change: Handler is now standing straight up while giving the command and hand signal.
Goal: Is to get three sets of four in a row downs with the handler standing.
STEP 1: Have the food reward ready in your hand.
STEP 2: While standing straight up (but when your puppy is close), give the "down" command and hand signal.
STEP 3A: If your puppy goes into a down, then use the marker word "good" and then pause for a beat before you do STEP 4.
STEP 2: While standing straight up (but when your puppy is close), give the "down" command and hand signal.
STEP 3A: If your puppy goes into a down, then use the marker word "good" and then pause for a beat before you do STEP 4.
STEP 3B: If your puppy does not go down, you can lure your hand down to the floor again. When your puppy goes into a proper down, use the marker word "good" and pause for a beat.
STEP 4: Then release your puppy with the marker word "yes" as you deliver the food reward.
STEP 5: Repeat

(CHANGED) CIRCLE SIT STAY WITH LEASH DROPPED:
Main Change: Now we are dropping the leash before we circle. However, if you are having problems getting 4 in a row, you can pick up the leash and widen the circle as a step back.
Goal: To get four in a row for 30 seconds. Later, it will be to increase the circle width. To increase the circle width, you may need to reduce the time again.
STEP 1: Have food ready in your hand.
STEP 2: Walk with your puppy a few steps.
STEP 2: Walk with your puppy a few steps.
STEP 3: Then stop as you give the command "sit".
STEP 4: Use your marker word "good."
STEP 5: Drop the leash on the ground.
STEP 6A: Then walk around your dog in a circle.
START WITH A SOMEWHAT CLOSE CIRCLE. WORK THESE UNTIL YOU CAN EASILY GET 4 IN A ROW FOR 30 SECONDS. AS THAT IS ACCOMPLISHED, YOU CAN START TO WIDEN THE CIRCLE A BIT IN THE NEXT SESSION.
STEP 6B: If the dog or puppy has much trouble with you going around, you can reduce the duration and later the circle width.
REMEMBER THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS THAT THE PUPPY CAN PERFORM 4 IN A ROW. THERE WILL BE GOOD DAYS AND HARDER DAYS. WE ALWAYS WANT THE PUPPY TO END SUCCESSFULLY.
STEP 7: If the dog or puppy attempts to get up, there are a couple of ways to save the command. By "save" I mean that the puppy does not get their bottom all the way up or their but lifts up a little but immediately goes back on the floor.
- You can step towards them using spatial pressure, and that might stop the puppy's but from coming up.
- You can use your marker word "no" and that may stop them.
STEP 8: When your puppy remains in a sit for the duration, use your marker word "good".
STEP 9: Then wait a beat to be sure the puppy understands the difference between the marker words.
STEP 10: Then give the marker word "yes" as you give the food reward.
STEP 11: Repeat
STEP 11: Repeat
